What will you learn?

The webinar from the series “Coffee with ISTDP Masters” is devoted to working with conflicts and sexual impulses in therapy. The guest of the meeting is Patricia Coughlin, one of the most experienced ISTDP teachers, who has been working clinically and training therapists around the world for over 40 years. The topic of sexuality rarely comes up in discussions about ISTDP, even though therapists regularly encounter it in their offices. The webinar discusses the importance of sexuality as an integral part of life and the need to treat sexual impulses like any other emotional material, such as anger or grief.

The webinar emphasizes that the therapist’s authenticity and commitment are crucial when working with such a demanding topic. Sexual impulses arise naturally in the therapeutic process as patients remove barriers in their relationships and begin to connect with their deeper desires.

One of the central themes of the meeting is sexualization as a defense mechanism. It discusses how patients can use sexuality to avoid emotional intimacy and protect themselves from more difficult emotional material.

What will you receive?

  • 01Is sexuality a difficult topic in psychotherapy?
