The Practical application of pressure
Intervention in ISTDP Psychotherapy
What will you learn?
Pressure is the fundamental and at the same time the most important intervention in ISTDP. It is present in every form of therapeutic work, from subtle activation to head-on collision. Its aim is to invite the patient into contact with the therapist. For this, the therapist’s courageous, compassionate determination to reach the person trapped in their own defensive mechanisms is of crucial importance.
The training combines solid theoretical foundations with a practical analysis of psychotherapy session transcripts. Participants follow step by step how the therapist builds the relationship, identifies the function of defences, monitors the level of anxiety, and applies pressure safely in a way adjusted to the patient’s individual capacities. The entire training is grounded in an understanding of therapy as a relationship in which change occurs at the neuronal level through the mobilization of deep emotional experiences.
The training is based on a detailed analysis of transcripts from authentic session recordings as well as on the triangle of conflict model and the threshold of feeling tolerance, giving participants practical tools they can apply immediately in sessions.
