Denial

Part 1

About this training

Denial is the foundation on which all the other defence mechanisms that we, human beings, resort to are built. We deny those areas of reality that are too overwhelming to see, to understand and to bear. It is the most basic form of defence, one that serves survival in the psychological and emotional sense.

A child has to deny various aspects of reality in order to adapt to the attachment system that is offered and available with adult caregivers. The various forms of denial are the building blocks of the structure of the False Self, which holds within it the various images of the self that the child had to resort to in order to defend, protect and conceal the adults’ failure to fulfil their obligations. When a child experiences incomprehensible behaviour from a parent or an important caregiver, the child begins to question its own subjective reality and stops trusting the sensations coming from its body. That is exactly when the False Self begins to form.

This training makes it possible to understand how denial, freedom and dependence affect all aspects of our lives, and the process of therapy in particular.

It shows why it is so important, in work with patients, to pay attention to the specific forms of denial, and how to recognize them.

If we understand how the mechanism of denial works, both in ourselves and in our patients, we gain a far greater chance of effective, deep therapeutic work.
